NEW CANAAN — The Silvermine Arts Center is celebrating its 100th anniversary with instructor demonstrations, hands-on art projects for all ages and new exhibitions in the student and main galleries during a special open house.
Current students, prospective students and children and families — even those who are new to Silvermine — are invited to experience a range of artistic disciplines and find out why the 100-year-old arts center is a preeminent destination to learn about creating the visual arts in Fairfield County.
The Open House is free and will run rain-or-shine Sept. 10. The day of activities will offer a morning session from 10 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Visitors can buy lunch at the event or bring their own — and all are welcome to stay the whole day.
There will be demonstrations by Silvermine’s instructors in the morning and afternoon in various media that are taught at the school, including ceramics/wheel throwing, woodworking, Ikebana, Sumi-e painting, abstract painting and more. Hands-on projects for all ages will be offered in clay, watercolors, printmaking and pastels.
Two new exhibitions will be on display as well at the Silvermine Arts Center.
In the galleries, the 72nd A•ONE, Silvermine’s signature exhibition, will feature a range of collectible contemporary artwork that is both vibrant and surprising.
The 32nd Silvermine Student Exhibition in the School Student Gallery will feature award winners from this year’s online student show. There will be an opening reception for the student show from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. after the Open House.
Silvermine’s Fall Session of classes will run from Sept. 19 to Dec. 17. Registration is online through the website.
The nonprofit Silvermine Arts Center, which is on a 5-acre campus in New Canaan, is one of the oldest artist communities in the United States. It offers an artist guild, an award-winning school of art offering classes for all ages, an arts and fine crafts shop, a permanent print collection and a gallery offering more than 20 contemporary and historic exhibitions annually.
Its galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Tuesdays to Saturdays and closed Sundays and Mondays.
