Curator

Beth C. McLaughlin is Chief Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA.

Ms. McLaughlin has held leadership and curatorial roles in the arts and museum fields for over 25 years at institutions across the U.S., including Fuller Craft Museum, Oakland Museum of California, and DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. She has curated over 45 exhibitions and has served as a juror for a number of cultural organizations, including American Craft Council, Fiber Art Now Excellence in Fibers, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, and the City of Worcester. Ms. McLaughlin has been published in several books and periodicals, such as Crafting Democracy: Fiber Arts and Activism, Fiber Art Now, the Decorative Arts Society Newsletter, and American Craft Magazine. Ms. McLaughlin is passionate about expanding awareness of the craft field, promoting the makers, and exploring the transformative powers of handmade objects.

 

Prospectus

Exhibition

FIBER 2020 – seeks to exhibit the best of contemporary fiber art. Submissions are invited that reflect the breadth of functional or non-functional works that use fiber and/or fiber art techniques in traditional or innovative ways. Works made from natural or high tech materials that reference fiber and that blur the lines between art, architecture and craft are welcome.
Eligibility – Open to all artists, 18 years of age and older, residing in the United States. Original artwork in any media will be considered. Eligible artwork must have been completed after January 1, 2018, and fall within the restrictions.
Entry Fee – $45 for up to 5 entries. To be considered for the Best in Show Award, artists are required to enter a minimum of three works.

Restrictions

Accepted Artwork – No artwork substitutions are allowed. No accepted entry may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition.
Wall-hung Works – May not exceed 96” in height or width, including frames. All work must be ready for hanging. Shipped work requiring glazing must use plexiglass. Paid return shipping labels must be included.
Sculptures – Should not exceed 8’h x 4’w x 4’d including base. Gallery has standard size pedestals.
Installations – Installations may not stipulate altering the character of the gallery wall or floor. Artists with special installation requirements should be available to assist in the installation of their work.
Handling Fee – Artists who ship their work must pay a $25.00 fee prior to their artwork being hung. This fee covers the expense of uncrating, storage of crates, re-crating and contacting shipper for return. Silvermine Galleries will waive the uncrating fee for artists who use a commercially manufactured artist's/strong box such as a StrongBox™ by Airfloat Systems, or similar brand, like Masterpak or Uline, or a FedEx Premium Art Box (not a FedEx Large Frame Box). Proper packaging is imperative to protect your work. Improper packaging may result in damaged, returned or unopened shipments. Strong boxes will be returned to the artists at the conclusion of the show at the artist's expense. NO STYROFOAM PEANUTS

Sales & Liability Insurance

All artwork must be for sale. A standard commission of 50% will be retained on all sales. The gallery reserves the right to negotiate up to 10% discount to secure sale of a piece. Commissions will then be based on discounted price. Price of work may not be changed after it is submitted. Silvermine Arts Center will insure all accepted work to 50% of artist’s stated retail price while in our possession. Artwork will be handled with all possible care. Work that is not picked up by May 18, 2020, is no longer insured and is left at the artist’s own risk.

Awards

Best in Show awards an artist a solo exhibition at Silvermine Arts Center with a $1,000 stipend for show related expenses. The Juror has additional awards to give at their discretion.
