Art honoring astronaut Mae Jemison made by first grade students at Bridgeport’s Discovery Magnet School will be on display at Sacred Heart University’s Discovery Science Center and Planetarium through April 15 in partnership with New Canaan’s Silvermine Arts Center.
Through the Silvermine Art Partners Outreach Education Program, young learners took part in a three-day artist residency exploring the wonders of space, science and self-expression. The program, titled “Space Explorers: The Universe and You,” used visual art to deepen classroom studies of astronomy and celebrate Jemison, the first Black woman in space.
“This program is a beautiful example of how we can turn STEM into STEAM,” Missy Savard, coordinator of educational outreach at Silvermine Arts Center, said in a news release. “By combining science, literature and visual arts, we are helping these students connect to the vastness of the universe and to their own creative potential.”
Silvermine Art Partners Outreach Programs connect professional teaching artists with local schools, enriching student learning through innovative, curriculum-based visual arts programming. Focused on creativity, collaboration and equity, the program serves over 2,000 students annually.
