Students will work directly from the figure model on the same pose for the duration of the eight weeks. We will begin by breaking the model into an abstract form or “construct,” then dividing the light and dark shadow patterns, the most fundamental principle in creating the illusion of three-dimensional form. Once articulated, the student will then begin to model the form in two-dimensions. Attention to surface texture, edges, anatomy, distribution of weight, balance, gesture and characterization will all be discussed and demonstrated while working from the model. Students will receive personal attention and will be walked through the process of creating a fully modeled figure drawing as well as attaining knowledge of representing the human form in a convincing realistic manner. The method and structure of this course is a design based on the tradition of the 19th century “ateliers” or studios. Artists such as Monet, Renoir, Matisse and Picasso all went through a similar program.
