Letter from the Executive Director

The Silvermine Mission statement says it all:

Grounded in the belief that art is vital to the spirit, creativity and wholeness of human beings, the mission of Silvermine Arts Center is to cultivate, promote and encourage growth through the arts; to showcase and serve artists; and to foster arts education and appreciation opportunities for the greater community.

Artists have been drawn to Silvermine since 1908 when visionary sculptor Solon Borglum established it as a place for artists to gather. After Borglum's untimely death in 1922, the artists formalized their association as the Silvermine Guild of Artists and, in 1924 they incorporated and established the Silvermine School of Art. What began as an artist colony meeting in an artist's nearby barn is now the Silvermine Arts Center, one of the finest and most exciting art centers in the United States.

Today, the Silvermine Arts Center includes the School of Art with more than 4,500 annual enrollments; the Silvermine Guild of Artists with nearly 300 juried artist members; five galleries presenting contemporary exhibitions and sponsoring prestigious regional and national competitions; a fine art and craft gift shop; community programs including lectures, film screenings, and multi-disciplinary performances; and Art Partners, an outreach program offering free and subsidized curriculum-based art classes in the neighboring Norwalk and Stamford schools. In addition, we offer ArtsFest, an annual, totally free event for the community that includes an exhibition, a lecture, a variety of performances and hands-on art activities for all ages, throughout our campus.

Membership fees, school tuition, art sales, donations, grants and sponsorship support the Silvermine Arts Center's many programs.

Come visit, enjoy our grounds, see an exhibition, take a class or workshop...

Feel the vibrancy that is Silvermine...

Hoping to see you soon,

Leslee Asch
Executive Director
